Speaking in tounges is simply talking in another language. Paul, also known as Apostle to the Gentiles, was given the ability to speak several languages (1 Corinthians 14:18,19). The following Bible quotation gives us an example of people speaking in tongues or different languages. "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" (Acts 2:4-11 NIV).

Apparently, one group of the Pentacostals emphasizes a salvation message based on Acts 2:38, that a person needs to repent and be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and receive the Holy Spirit, that receiving the Holy Spirit is necessary for salvation, and is accompanied by speaking in tongues. Brotherkaddeesh, Unregistered There are two distinctly different types of Tongues or Languages refered to in the Bible. The first is earthly languages or Tongues of Men. These are languages that can be known naturally by practicing to speak them. e.g. English, Japanese, Hebrew.
The second is heavenly languages or Tongues of Angels. These are languages that cannot be learnt naturally so Paul the Apostle refers to them as "Unknown Tongues." Here are the scriptures to prove this:

1Co 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

1Co 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
