Prayer PDF Print E-mail

Prayer is the unique and special way we are able to communicate with our heavenly Father, Jehovah. The Bible not only teaches us why we should pray, but also the things we should pray for, and how we should pray. Many people have been taught to pray with their eyes closed, heads bowed, and hands folded, but the Bible reference John 17:1 shows that Jesus looked up toward heaven when he prayed to his Father, Jehovah. Some people pray to be seen of others, but God's Son taught that prayer should be a private matter. But, there are examples of people in the Bible who prayed together.

A few examples of things a person may pray for include the Holy Spirit, understanding, forgiveness, help, and strength for one's self or for others, for the new kingdom to come, and to thank our heavenly Father for the countless gifts He has given to mankind. 1 Timothy 2:5 also shows us that God's Son is our mediator (or go-between), and that when we pray to Jehovah God, we must pray in Jesus' name (see John 16:23).

How and  Why to Pray

Psalm 5:1-3  King David directed his prayer to God and looked up. In Psalm 48:1-2, God dwells up in heaven, toward the north. This is the direction where we should direct our prayers.

1 John 5:14-15  We can have confidence that our prayers will be answered, as long as we pray for things that are according to God's will. The Bible teaches us what things to pray for.

Matthew 6:5-13  Jesus tells us that our prayers should be something private between ourself and our Creator. He also tells us that we should not use repetitious prayers, and gave us examples of several things we should pray for, in what is known as "The Lord's Prayer".

Luke 11:9-13  Continue to ask and seek for understanding of God's word and the help that He gives through the power of His Holy Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18  Pray often and always give thanks to our heavenly Father, through His Son Jesus Christ.

John 16:23-24  Just ask and receive.

I work with a girl whose brother is dying of cancer and he is young. I asked what I could do for her and she said thoughts and prayer and I told her I would. I don't know if she is religious but I have prayed for her to have strength and learn what is right. What else should I pray for her?

Hello. Tough situation. I feel bad for her and her brother. Your prayer was great to ask for strength and that she learn the truth. You can also pray that God's will be done and pray for his Kingdom to come. I will pray for that also. When God's Kingdom, led by his Son Jesus Christ, has come and is established, there will be no more pain or death. -Revelation 21:1-4.
