What is Hell? PDF Print E-mail

Hell is simply the grave, as taught in the Bible. Where do we go when we die? The Bible is very clear on this subject. Christ, the apostles and prophets taught that when a person dies they are asleep in a state of inactivity until the time of their resurrection. Some clergy explain that when someone dies, good people go to heaven and bad people go to "hell", being tortured by demons for all eternity. This false teaching has been passed on as an accepted belief for centuries.

Some clergy say the deceased are now "looking down from heaven, watching over you". Have you ever been to a funeral where the clergyman says, "This man didn't quite live up to the standard and is now screaming at us from below, being tortured by a fiery landscape of brimstone and dwelling among devils?" Probably not. To condemn an individual this way would be to judge him, and the Bible says it's not time for judgement" (Ecclesiastes 3:17, 12:14). If they declare a person is in heaven, is not that making a judgment? Also reason this, the Bible teaches that we either live forever or die forever (Deuteronomy 30:19).  If a person were being tortured for all eternity, wouldn't he still be alive?  When a person dies, they are asleep in the grave until their time of resurrection.  Daniel 12:2 says, "And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt" (KJV).

Before going through this study, it would be helpful if you first went through the studies titled Soul and Spirit and Death and Resurrection.

The Grave

Ecclesiastes 3:18-20  When people die, they sleep in the grave until the time of judgment.

Ecclesiastes 9:10  When one is dead, they have no thoughts or actions.

Jonah 1:17, 2:1-2  Jonah cried to God from his would-be grave.

Acts 2:25-31  When Christ died he was put into his tomb, but was not left in hell (the grave). His Father brought him back to life after three days and nights. (See references below).

Revelation 20:13, 14  Death and the grave will be eliminated.

True but hell is also on this earth because we as mankind put are ownselfs to hell

Perhaps the following passage aligns with your comment?

"For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body" (Romans 8:18-23 KJV).

If hell is not a real place, how does one explain the many stories of others who died and came back. These are from people who have claimed the same accounts of dying and going to hell.

Are you talking about scripture accounts? If so please provide the scriptures so that we can help explain. If you are talking about people who claim to have gone to hell and back, don't believe it because the bible does not support it. Also understand from the study above that hell is simply a grave. Religions speak of a hell which is a place of fiery torment. That is not true.

Revelation 20:15 Anyone not found in the book of life is thrown into the lake of fire.
— Bible Research

Christendom supports a place called hell that torments people for eternity. The Bible says... "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death." Revelation 20:14

Hell is cast into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is not hell. Hell is not a fiery place of torment. Original text simply call it a grave. When hell is cast into the lake of fire, it means there will be no more graves or death.

The story of Lazarus is a parable. The moral is, listen to Christ, the Apostles, and our true ministers, those who wrote the Bible. Do not conform to this world as the rich man did, but rather be like Lazarus and follow the example in 2 Thessalonians 1:3-5, "We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:".

I mistyped: Lazarus was not the one in Hell, the rich man was in Hell and wanted Lazarus to dip his finger in water to cool the rich man's tongue. Sorry about the typo. The rich man wasn't asleep but fully aware of his torment.

I agree with You are Wrong. Hell is a real place and real people go there. Read 2 Corinthians 5:2-3. These verses prove there is NO SOUL SLEEP.
Also read Jude 7: "...those who SUFFER the punishment of eternal fire."
Revelation 20:15 Anyone not found in the book of life is thrown into the lake of fire.
Luke 16:23 "In hell, where he was in torment..." This talks about Lazarus in Hell and seeing Abraham. Lazarus isn't "asleep", but fully aware of his torment. Read Luke 16:19-31.
The lie that Hell is not real is one from Satan.

Your teachings stem from Charles Taze Russel, the founder of Jehovah's Witnesses. Do a little research on him and his teachings. He was blinded by Satan, the Jehovah's Witnesses are blinded by Satan, and sadly, you are also blinded by Satan to the truth of God's Word. I pray that God will bind Satan and that God would remove the blinders Satan has placed over your eyes.
